Asian stocks swung between gains and losses after a report showed U.S. retail sales were better than forecast, boosting the outlook for exporters. QBE Insurance Group Ltd. (QBE) slumped after issuing a profit forecast.
Honda Motor Co., a carmaker that gets about 84 percent of sales outside Japan, climbed 1.3 percent in Tokyo, while rival advanced 1.2 percent. Billabong International Ltd., a surfwear maker that gets almost half its revenue from the Americas, gained 1.5 percent in Sydney. QBE Insurance dropped 3.5 percent after Australia’s largest insurer by market value forecast that its insurance margin in the first half will be lower than last year.
The MSCI Asia Pacific Index was little changed at 132.85 as of 11:30 a.m. in Tokyo, having swung between gains and losses at least 15 times. About the same number of stocks rose as fell on the gauge.

IRVINE, CA: Jamie Anderson, arguably the most dominant women’s snowboarder in the world today, inked another long-term agreement with Billabong.
Jamie Anderson had an unprecedented year in 2010/11 season. She won nearly every slopestyle event; convincingly winning her second TTR World Title, named the overall Winter Dew Tour Champion, and brought home a gold medal from the European X Games.
Candy Harris, Billabong Brand Director, says, “We are thrilled to be continuing our support of Jamie, she has become a true icon for the sport and we know the future holds no limit to her accomplishments.”
Growing up in South Lake Tahoe, Anderson started snowboarding at age nine as part of the Sierra at Tahoe Team. Very quickly, she rose to the top becoming the youngest Winter X Games medalist by age 15. It was her burgeoning talent that initially caught the attention of Billabong and industry media alike.

Noll Surfboards is pleased to announce the opening of its flagship store at 1709 N. El Camino Real in San Clemente, CA. The store opening coincides with the re-launch of one of the first American surf brands. Noll Surfboards was originally established by Greg Noll in Manhattan Beach, CA, in 1951.
“Our goal is to return surfing to its roots,” said Jed Noll, Greg’s son and Noll Surfboards’ CEO. “My dad is famous for being one of the greatest big-wave surfers of all time, but he was also one of the founding fathers of the surf industry.” That era — the 1950s in California and Hawaii — was a foundational period for the sport and lifestyle, which blew up worldwide in the ’60s.
“We want to bring back the essence of what surfing was all about back then: the freedom to explore what’s possible, searching for the perfect wave with your friends, living out there on the edge. It’s that vintage sense [...]

Fenwick surf shop opens

Červen 2nd, 2011

A new surf shop has opened on Coastal Highway.
Atlantic Shoals opened at the end of April and General Manager Fletcher Birch said his goal is to offer something for everybody. As a surfer for more than 25 years, he knows what he wants from a surf store and he tries to offer that to his customers.
“None of the big brands have been left out because that’s what people want,” he said.
Birch said the store carries merchandise from Roxy, Billabong, RVCA and Toes on the Nose, among other brands. The summer, the store will add a little girls’ section.
“We’re trying to cater to what everybody needs to go to the beach or back to school,” he said.
Most importantly, Birch said he wants to create a comfortable, fun shopping experience. It’s the same feel he has succeeded in offering at his first store by the same name in his hometown of Chincoteague Island, Va.
And you don’t have to be a surfer to [...]

Centralia outlet shops thriving

Květen 30th, 2011

Inside the Coach store, clusters of women and teenage girls hover and jostle as they pore over the selection of high-end purses than run $400 and upward.
Behind the four open registers, lines are at least five-deep, shoppers patiently waiting with a purse or two — or more — in hand.
Salespeople wander and chat, noting that there’s no sale or special event to bring in so many customers. Just a typical day at Coach’s factory outlet mall store in Centralia, where the average shopper might drop a few hundred dollars in one stop — and where, according to the associates, there are usually at least a few dozen customers on a slow day, and 10 times that on weekends and during sales.
The situation is the same at most of the 30-plus stores at the mall, where total revenue rose 20 percent from 2009 to 2010, said marketing and property manager Renata Johnson. There’s a new Christopher & Banks women’s clothing store [...]

Fall from grace of Mr Billabong

Květen 23rd, 2011

For 18 months Billabong surfwear boss Matthew Perrin swore he wasn’t having an affair.
His former wife recalls the Gold Coast multimillionaire looking her in the eye and swearing on their three children’s lives that he had not strayed.
Whenever Nicole questioned her childhood sweetheart, he would allegedly tell her: ”You’re paranoid. You’re trying to destroy our marriage. Of course you trust me. We’ve been together since you were 16. There is no reason not to trust me.”
But Nicole couldn’t let go of her suspicions. Her husband was always on the phone, would pull out of holidays at the last minute citing work, and constantly wanted to party.
Then there was the second phone Nicole learnt he was using to secretly text during their family holiday in Hawaii. And the diamond bracelet or the Gucci dress, two sizes too small for her, hidden in his suitcase.
There were the whispers she kept hearing that he was seeing a mother from their children’s school. The [...]

World No 2 Sally Fitzgibbons will be ready to pounce if ASP women’s tour leader Carissa Moore shows signs of choking over the closing two events.
France and California are the last stops on the seven-event world circuit and Fitzgibbons and 18-year-old Moore are the only two in contention for the title.
Fitzgibbons returned to Gerroa on Tuesday night after finishing the bridesmaid to Moore in the final of last weekend’s Billabong Pro in Rio de Janeiro.

A two-time winner on the 2011 tour, the 20-year-old kept Sunday’s loss in perspective and remains optimistic about breaking through for her maiden world title.
“It’s definitely still in reach, but I’m focusing more on my training and my surfing and hopefully the results will come with that,” Fitzgibbons said.
“It was a great event over there. We didn’t do much sightseeing, but we got to see bits of the city and it’s always good to see a new country.
“Surfing-wise, I was [...]

The Big Wave Challenge

Květen 13th, 2011

In addition to big wave experience, winning the SB Boardriders Big Wave Challenge would require the cooperation of a photographer/videographer to document the ride, and Mother Nature.
The uncontrollable variables, notwithstanding, Mohagen’s confidence that he could win the contest wasn’t unfounded.
The winter of 2009-10 brought the South Bay its largest number of big swells in recent memory. But 2010-11 promised far fewer big swells. That meant the winner would need sufficient knowledge of local breaks to recognize what might well be a single, one- to two-hour window when the swell direction, wind, and tide would all come together to produce a rideable, big wave during the December through March contest period.
Within the contest boundaries – Palos Verdes on the south and El Segundo on the north – the only rideable breaks during big swells are Hammerland on the north side of the El Segundo jetty, the Redondo Breakwall and Indicator in Palos Verdes. All three are lefts, which favor goofy-footers [...]

SL Green Realty Corp. (SLG) said it acquired the remaining interest in 1515 Broadway, the Times Square skyscraper that houses the headquarters of Viacom Inc. (VIA/B), in a deal that values the property at $1.21 billion.
The company bought the stake from SITQ, a real estate investment unit of Canadian pension-fund manager Caisse de Depot et Placement du Quebec, SL Green said in a statement today. The valuation for the 1.75 million-square-foot (162,600-square- meter) tower equals about $691 a square foot.
“Here we go again,” said Dan Fasulo, managing director of Real Capital Analytics Inc., a New York-based research firm that tracks commercial property sales globally. “That value is another example of how the market has improved over the last 18 months. We’re within maybe 10 percent of record levels.”
SL Green, Manhattan’s biggest office landlord, has been benefiting from climbing New York office values as vacancies decline and rents rise. The real estate investment trust yesterday said first-quarter funds from operations jumped [...]
